DEADLINE: JANUARY 20, 2020
The sixth annual call for the Suad Joseph Graduate Student Research Awards is now open for applications. The award is made possible as a result of a donation by Suad Joseph, Distinguished Research Professor of Anthropology and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, from the proceedings of the UC Davis Prize awarded to Dr. Joseph in May 2014.
- Three to five awards of up to $1,000 each will be awarded for doctoral graduate students (applicant must be enrolled in a Phd -- not MA -- level program) in the Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies or the Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Sciences, UC Davis.
- The research must focus on research concerning the Middle East and/or South Asia or their diaspora.
- Application Requirements: The application should be in the form of a research proposal, typed single spaced, maximum 300 words, 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1” margins. The title of the proposal should be centered on the cover page; the applicant’s name, department, date, and year in the program in the right hand side of the cover page. The pages need to be numbered at the bottom center. Funds are only for research expenses, not for stipend or living expenses. The proposal should answer these questions very briefly. Follow this format, putting the question in a line above your answer:
- What is your research question?
- What is your answer to the question?
- How have others answered the question?
- What is missing in the way others have answered the question?
- Why is your answer a more plausible answer to the question?
- What is the significance of answering this question?
- What will you do with the results?
- Letter of recommendation: One brief letter from a professor who will be mentoring the graduate student on the research.
- 5. Updated CV / resume
- Results: The awardees will be expected to present their research results in the Spring of the following year in a symposium planned by ME/SA for that purpose
- 6. Applications must be submitted before 5pm on January 20, 2020. Results will be announced by March, 2020. Submit the applications to: mesastaff@ucdavis.edu
