About

Manar Al-Shatarat received her BA in English Language and Literature from Al al-Bayt University in Jordan, and she received her MA in World Languages from the University of Utah in 2015. Her research focuses on language and identity, and she has published work on a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan in the field of sociolinguistics.

Al-Shatarat has worked as instructor and coordinator of English as a second language in Jordan and as an instructor of Arabic as a second language in the US. She has been a Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant and then lecturer in Arabic at UC Davis 2010-2012, and a teaching assistant and then Instructor of Arabic at the University of Utah 2012-2014. At the University of Utah, she was awarded the Khosrow Mostofi Fellowship and the Marvin J. Ashton Scholarship, both in 2014.

Manar Al-Shatarat returned to Davis in Arabic in 2015. Her teaching experience includes Elementary Arabic and Levantine Colloquial Arabic as well as the UC Davis Summer Intensive Elementary Arabic course. She has also taught a First Year Seminar about Levantine Culture and the Arab Culture Ensemble of UC Davis, for which she regularly assists in the selection and preparation of Levantine materials. In related work, she served as a speaking partner for the Critical Languages Scholarship at the American Center of Oriental Research in Jordan, and she has contributed to curriculum development in the EyeVocab project organized by Michael Mills and the federally funded Arabic Encounters project. In addition to her work in the areas of English and Arabic language and culture, Manar Al-Shatarat founded the Arab Student Association of UC Davis.
