Zeev Maoz is professor of Political Science and director of the International Relations Program at the University of California, Davis, as well as Distinguished Fellow at the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya, Israel. He is the President of the Peace Science Society (International) for the 2007-08 academic year. He served as head of the Graduate School of Government and Policy at Tel-Aviv University, as the Head of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, the Academic Director of the M.A. program of the National Defense College of the IDF, and Chairman of the Department of Political Science at the University of Haifa (1991-1994). Prof. Maoz received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1981. He also held visiting appointments at Carnegie-Mellon University, New York University, Rice University, and the University of Michigan.
Prof. Maoz is the author and editor of ten books in international relations. The two most recent are Bound by Struggle: The Strategic Evolution of Enduring International Rivalries (The University of Michigan Press, 2002), and Defending the Holy Land: A Critical Analysis of Israel’s National Security and Foreign Policy (The University of Michigan Press, 2006). His articles appeared in the American Political Science Review, World Politics, Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Security, International Studies Quarterly and others. His fields of specialization include strategy and international security affairs, international relations theory, decision making and negotiations, political methodology, and Middle East politics. Prof. Maoz is one of the first Israelis to have published a major article in the Egyptian daily newspaper, Al Ahram.
Prof. Maoz serves on the editorial board of Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Interactions, and Conflict Management and Peace Science. He is the first non-North American recipient of the Karl Deutsch Award of the International Studies Association for his scholarly contribution to international relations research.
